This misconception originates from the earliest, now obsolete Wi-Fi standards: 1997, IEEE 802.11 (max 2 Mbps), 22 MHz channel width 1999, IEEE 802.11b (max 11 Mbps), 22 MHz channel width Back then, Wi-Fi channel width was 22 MHz (due to a different modulation). Nowadays, the archaic 22 MHz channels are no longer used, replaced by 20 MHz channels which include a “guard band” (protective spacing). Moreover, control channels are understandable for neighboring Wi-Fi APs in both arrangements. Why is this important? If devices transmit on other channels than those listed above, neighboring APs receive overlapped (attenuated, interfered) signals which they do not understand. They interpret this as persistent interference and start transmitting at full power over the other AP’s signal. This leads to very likely interruptions or corruption of the neighboring AP’s transmission, which then has to be retransmitted anyway. In contrast, if APs "understand" each other (i.e., detect control signals on the same channels from other APs or clients), they remain silent and wait until the current transmission block finishes before they begin transmitting. This results in less interference between neighbors and successful data transmission "on the first try," without unnecessary retransmissions. Ultimately, this can increase throughput, reduce latency, and also allow lower transmission power.
